First revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022, the ambitious fantasy RPG has been significantly impacted, with the team now operating with a “skeleton crew.” The studio’s founder, Jeff Gardiner, told PC Gamer that the situation has been “challenging” but that the project is still moving forward.

Initially designed as a fully open-world RPG set in 12th-century Portugal during the time of the Templars, Wyrdsong was backed by NetEase with a $13.2 million budget. However, mass layoffs across the industry—including at NetEase—forced the studio to rethink its development plans.

According to Gardiner, creating a large-scale open-world RPG demands significant resources, both in terms of personnel and funding, which the current market struggles to support.
